 i have discovered that well and simple individual shaped objects put together with good symetry is the best way to build a great looking pattern

Also every time you make a new part of the mandala or what ever.... design it in a connecting circle. its seems to work everytime. most of this mandala was not working everytime I redesigned it. then I started to design the designs in conecting circles and it worked really well

How to make smart object mandala in photoshop

make document 5000 by 5000
take your line tool, select last box up in left hand corner and make new layerin your layers , then hold shift and make line from top middle to center, then duplicate that layer.  then set at angle you want
now take your pen tool and trace over your angles then fill layer to make pie slice in gray

or make a squaure. then turn that gray shape into smart object by right clicking it in the layers.
now make copies of that smart object and put them all right next to each other so whatever you draw in it the lines will connect seamlessly.check to see if drawing lines up and works before createing and duplicating
Then highlight all those layers and hit cntrl g to put them in a group
Now in that group double click on thumbnail in layers on the first shape you created to get the pop up smart object up. now what ever you draw on that smart object will reflect on your mandala whole after you press save.
to make sure there will be no gaps.... select your shape with magic wand then expand that a little like 5 pixels then hit ctrl g to make a group of that. then with that group layer still select ht the quick mask button in you layers window
now when you click back on your shape layer and draw your pattern it won't go outside your shape borders
